Eating disorders result in psychological and medical consequences, affecting a person’s emotional and physical health. Treatment of eating disorders includes psychological counseling, medical intervention (if needed) and nutritional counseling. Many who struggle with eating disorders have educated themselves and know well food’s caloric values. To restore health, it is imperative that they learn food’s nutritional value and the importance of food’s role in stabilizing their emotional and physical health.

Restricting caloric intake, purging food and taking diet pills, laxatives and diuretics depletes the body of necessary fuel for balanced health. In eating disorder treatment, registered dieticians work with each client to identify and correct these deficiencies. Laboratory tests help determine areas of specific physical needs. Nutritional counseling differs from psychological counseling in that it focuses on body image, weight, food and exercise. Those who struggle with eating disorders have lost perspective on what a normal meal looks like and feels like in the body. They have also exercised to an extreme or stopped exercising completely.  It is difficult if not impossible for this person to regain balance health without re-education and support in these areas. They must re-learn the body and mind’s natural cues for hunger, fullness and contentment while managing the emotional impact of changing their dietary habits.

Not every person who diets, loses weight or gains weight has an eating disorder. But for those who do, therapeutic intervention can be life saving. Nutritional counseling is an integral part of regaining emotional and physical health. Nutrition eating disorder treatment is necessary for restoration for health, to improve cognition and to bring the client back into their body in order to ready them to do the psychological work need for recovery from their eating disorder. Nutrition eating disorder however should never be the main focus after the restoration is stabilized as this focus alone simply model control of food, thereby, replicating “managing food” like an eating disorder itself. Nutrition eating disorder treatment is a counseling approach rather than “managing food.”
